What is the deal with cats and dogs? Can’t they get along?
“Well sometimes they do,” says Katarina, “but not always”. Learn more about the relationship between cats and dogs and some of the reasons why they fight.
Why Do Cats and Dogs Fight?
Have you heard the phrase “Fighting likes cats and dogs”? That came from somewhere, right? Cats and dogs have a reputation of being enemies.
Cats and Dogs Don’t Always Fight
But Many Times They Do. Why?
Reason #1: The Food Chain
The food chain shows the order of what creatures eats what. Animals higher in the food chain eat animals lower in the food chain. Dogs are higher on the food chain than cats. This means, in nature, out in the wild, dogs can consider cats as food. Did you know there are dogs and cats in the wild, today, that are not domesticated? This means they aren’t tame or safe to be a pet. Long ago, humans took wild dogs and cats and taught them over time to become domesticated pets.
Reason #2: Cats and Dogs are Different
When two creatures are pretty different, it can make be more difficult to get along.
A Dog and Cat Play Differently.
A dog will chase anything and a dog may play by chasing the cat, but the cat doesn’t understand. The cat feels annoyed or thinks the dog is trying to hurt it, so it runs away, afraid, or defends itself, which leads to a fight.
For Example: A dog will chase anything and a dog may play by chasing the cat, but the cat doesn’t understand. The cat feels annoyed or thinks the dog is trying to hurt it, so it runs away, afraid, or defends itself, which leads to a fight.
A Cat and Dog Fighting Can Be Like You Fighting With Your Brother or Sister
Two creatures sharing the same living space will most likely disagree or misunderstand each other sometimes and they can be selfish and not want to share with others.
But if you Can Teach a Dog or a Cat…
How to respect and understand one another, they’ll most likely be friends. And the same goes for human beings like you and me.
